STORM RIDERS PREMIERE with TOM CARROLL and ROSS CLARKE-JONES
The Sunshine Surf Masters is the longest running surfing competition in WA, and one of the longest running surfing competitions in Australia. The event is a highlight on the WA surfing calendar and always attracts the best surfers from across WA to Geraldton to compete for a share of over $12,000 worth of cash and prizes.
The Sunshine Surf Masters reaches another milestone in 2012, notching up 36 years as a surfing convention. Local surfing legends Leon Norris and Sam Salmond have been involved in running the Sunny Comp since it began in 1976 and have great memories from the early days but also appreciate the advances that have transformed the event into what it is today.
Quote from Leon: The Sunshine Surfmasters is an iconic event, originally established for the local surfing fraternity. The event has evolved considerably over it’s 36 year history but the main theme of providing a good spread of age divisions has been mantained. It’s fantastic to see how well-patronised the event is every year by competitors, spectators and sponsors. The Geraldton Board Riders committee puts a lot of work in during the lead up to make sure everything runs smoothly. The Sunshine Surfmasters is my favorite event and with the forecast looking good for great waves at Flat Rocks this weekend the action will be on for young and old! The weekend will be a feast of surfing with surfing legend and owner of the Hot Buttered surfing label, Terry Fitzgerald attending the event. Hot Buttered were an original sponsor of the event and had surfers the caliber of Dougal walker and Derek Hynd competing in the event during the seventies. It will be a trip down memory lane for Terry Fitzgerald. Other famous names in town for the weekend will be big-wave surfing legends Ross-Clarke Jones and Tom Carroll who will appear live at the screening of Storm Surfers 3D at the Geraldton Cinema Centre. The movie features the biggest and wildest waves from around the globe including our Abrolhos Islands being surfed by Ross and Tom. Two showings Friday evening have already sold out.
Last years Sunshine Surfmasters Open mens winner Margaret Rivers Brett Hardy will be defending his title and will have some serious competition from the locals including Max Marsden, James Fleming, Ben McGay and Justin Hagan.
Other divisions are Cadets, Juniors. Seniors, Masters, Grand Masters, Womens and Non-Competitors (a division for surfers who haven’t competed in a Surfing WA or GBR event this year). Surfers eliminated in the first round in each division get a second chance in the infamous Dunny Bowl round. And as always, the Geraldton Beach Hotel expression session will showcase the latest in innovative aerial surfing.
This year’s Sunshine Surf Masters will be held on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 September. Presentation evening will be held at the Geraldton Beach Hotel from 6pm Sunday. Entering the event is easy. It can all be done on-line via the GBR website (www.gerosurf.com.au). Entries need to be in by 5pm Wednesday 5 September. Entries are also available from the Corner Surf Shop.
For the fourth year running, this year’s Sunshine Surf Masters will be broadcast live on the web all weekend thanks to WA Country Builders: follow the link on www.gerosurf.com.au. This gives anyone who can’t make it to the event at Flat Rocks the option of watching live local surfing action anytime across the weekend.
The staging of the 2012 Sunshine Surf Masters would not be possible without the ongoing support of loyal sponsors, including some of the best surf industry brands and many local businesses.
